How to be productive when you’re at home

Being productive when you’re at home all day can be really hard. One minute you’re sitting on the sofa telling yourself that you’ll start your work in a minute and next thing you know the day is gone and all you’ve done is finish a Netflix series. So how do you avoid the Netflix trap and become productive when you’re at home ? Below are 5 simple tips on how you can get your work done when you’re at home:

1. Make a to do list – A to do list will give you visual guidance of the tasks that you need to do and you’ll be able to track your progress (my favourite part). I love ticking things off my list because I find that the more things I tick off, the more motivated I get to finish off the rest of my tasks. A to do list is also physical evidence of whether or not you’re hitting your goals.

2. Prioritise – A to do list is all good but if you want it to be even better, make sure you prioritise your tasks. Prioritise your list to make sure you spend your time wisely. One way to do this is to schedule big tasks when you have the most energy. For example, I usually have the most energy in the morning, so that’s when I do the big tasks that need a lot of energy and focus.

3. Make a schedule – Once you’ve made your to do list, make a schedule for your days and plan when you’re going to do your tasks. If you want to get the most out of your schedule, go over your schedule for the next day the night before. When you wake up in the morning you will be focused and you’ll know exactly what the plan for the day is. A schedule will give your days more structure, reduce the chances of you getting distracted and help you manage your time effectively. You will save time that you would have otherwise spent planning, preparing and making decisions on plan for the day.

4. Minimise distractions
To use your time effectively while youre working, make sure your gadgets are put away.

5. Take a break
Don’t work yourself to the ground. Make sure you take regular breaks while you are working to avoid burn out. I like to take breaks for 5 – 10 minutes every hour but you can take breaks in anyway that’s suitable for you. Also make sure you have long breaks for lunch and time to shut down for the day.
