Why you need to start journaling


Journaling is all about writing down your goals, thoughts and feelings. It’s basically like a diary with a purpose. Journaling works best when it’s done consistently on a daily basis.


What are the benefits of journaling ?

Journaling is good for expressing yourself, keeping your memories and most importantly it’s good for your mental health.

Journaling can get you into a state of mindfulness by getting you out of your head, make you present and help you deal with stress better. You know that feeling you have when you’re feeling stressed or you’ve got something on your mind that you’re holding on to and can’t stop thinking about. The minute you talk to someone and offload, you instantly feel better. Journaling can give you that feeling too. Sometimes the things on your mind are not things that you necessarily want to talk to other people about but harbouring negative feelings can cause long term stress. So what do you do? You journal! A journal gives you an outlet to clear your mind and have a dialogue with yourself about your feelings so that you can detach from negative thoughts.

A journal gives you a tangible record of your life history that you can use as a reflection tool to track your progress in life. With a journal, self reflection can be very effective because you can learn a lot about yourself. You can see whether you have a pattern of behaviour that you need to work on. You can learn what your strengths and weaknesses are. The more you get to know and understand the type of person that you are, what motivates you, the higher the likelihood of you achieving your goals. Journaling lets you to work through what you need to in order to become the person you want or need to be.

Now you’re thinking journaling is a good idea but where do you even start ? Just grab a pen and paper because there’s no right or wrong way to journal, it’s a personal thing and different ways work for different people. You can either reflect on your day, an event or your emotions. You can write a gratitude or goal orientated journal.

  • Reflective journaling – writing down self reflective entries; this can be reflecting on your day or on certain events, your feelings (positive and negative). What you have learned from the events or emotions.
  • Gratitude journaling (my favourite) – writing down things that you are grateful for. There’s a saying ‘gratitude turns what you have into enough and more’. A gratitude journal can help your mind focus on the positive things in your life rather than the negatives and fill you with a sense of appreciation and abundance.
  • Goal focused journaling- writing about what your goals are, how to plan to achieve them and tracking your progress towards achieving those goals.


Personally I like combining all the different styles of journaling together. The way I journal is different on different days. Sometimes I just write about what I’m grateful for or about all the things above. The way I journal is based on my mood on the day. Journaling works best if you do it consistently on a daily basis, either first thing in the morning, at the end of the day or whatever time you is suitable for you. If life gets busy and you stop journaling for a while, that’s fine as long a you keep get back on to it until it turns it into a habit. I have stopped journaling many times when life got in the way, but I always feel so much better when I get back into the habit. Journaling is like exercise, after doing it you feel great and you don’t regret it.
